I see myself as a cultural and religious explorer, probing deeply into the heart of religious and cultural ceremonies. My camera is a Key, opening doors and giving me access to the personalities and hearts of the world’s believers.
My photographs document a search for sameness in a world that can seem so different. Beneath the costumes, the smoke, the fire, the symbols, the idols we are all the same. Whether the subject of my photo is a pilgrim’s long journey to Jerusalem or the barefoot villagers of India walking for a week to baptize themselves in the holy Ganges, underneath there is a sameness, a clear expression of love, connection to God, to the mystical, to that something beyond and within us.
I try not to approach my subject intellectually. Instead I open myself to the experience and try to let go of what I know about the culture, my prejudice and concepts. My photographs are not about the church, the idols, the physicality but about the soul deep down, the core of the human being.
In my work I try to reach that level of the individual, that level of the soul where all differences fail to exist. If through my work you can get the "feel" of the soul and find a bit of yourself in there – my goal has been achieved.
My photography has evolved as I evolve on a personal spiritual level. My photos reflect the journey I go through in my own spiritual search for the Light, God, the Beyond. The technical aspects of photography are not the ones leading me when I take pictures, on the contrary, I try to let go of the mind, the technique and instead enter a dance with the subjects I photograph, where the camera is just a key, a tool used intuitively. Because it is not the perfect look I am searching for, but that emotional, spiritual experience that I try to convey through my art.
